What to Wear for Your Session: Outfit Tips from a Photographer
Outfit tips from your photographer
Let’s be real. Picking out outfits for photos can feel like a lot. But trust me, what you wear makes a big impact on how your photos look and feel. I’m all about capturing candid, relaxed moments — and when you feel good in what you're wearing, that magic shines through.
Whether you're planning your engagement session or a cozy in-home family shoot, here’s a simple guide to help you dress in a way that feels comfortable, timeless, and true to you.
Engagement Session Outfit Tips
Relaxed, timeless, and low pressure
Start with what feels like you
No need to overthink it. Your outfits should reflect who you are and what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Think movement-friendly pieces, breathable fabrics, and nothing stiff or overly trendy.
Bring a second outfit
I always recommend bringing two looks if possible. Start with something casual and relaxed, then change into a slightly dressier option for a different vibe. It's a great way to get variety in your gallery without a ton of effort.
Coordinate with your location
Planning a beach session? Stick with soft neutrals, light fabrics, and flowy pieces. Shooting in a natural field? Earth tones like terracotta, sage, and cream photograph beautifully. Downtown or modern locations pair well with richer tones and a little more structure.
Colors and fabrics that photograph well
Go for earthy neutrals like ivory, olive, rust, oat, taupe, and warm gray. Add depth with textures like linen, gauze, or lightweight knits. Layers and movement look amazing on camera, especially in wind or golden hour light.
Favorite stores to shop
Here are a few go-to spots my clients love:
Baltic Born for dresses that flow and flatter
Old Navy for basics and affordable kid-friendly options
Lulus for modern romantic looks
Anthropologie for dreamy, boho-inspired styles
What to avoid
Bright neons or harsh colors like bright red or jet black
Clothes with logos or text
Tiny prints or stripes that can cause distortion in photos
Uncomfortable fits or anything you constantly adjust
Consider the season (yes, even in Florida)
Florida weather is no joke. In the summer, go with sleeveless tops, breezy dresses, and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Winter can get cool, so bring layers like cardigans, light jackets, or boots to stay warm and stylish.
Family Session Styling Tips
Keep it cohesive, not matchy matchy
Choose a palette
Pick 3 to 4 colors and build from there. Think soft and neutral with a pop of color or texture. It’s all about variety without clashing. A good combo might be:
Mom in a cream dress
Dad in olive or sage
A toddler in tan overalls
A baby in a knit oatmeal onesie
In-home lifestyle sessions
These are some of my absolute favorites. For cozy, natural photos, wear pieces that feel like home. Loungewear, neutral pajamas, and soft knits are perfect. Skip the shoes, snuggle up, and let the real moments happen.
For the kids
Stick to simple, soft textures. Linen rompers, comfy dresses, or oversized sweaters are perfect. Avoid loud patterns, cartoon graphics, or shoes with characters or flashing lights.
Your photos should feel like you. Don’t stress about perfection. Focus on comfort, confidence, and letting your personality shine. The best outfits are the ones that help you feel like your most natural self.
